Booze In The Bad Old Days

May 7th, 2008 by Tom

Boris has banned booze on tubes, buses, DLR and Tramlink.  I wonder how much of problem this was?  Here’s a snippet from the last TfL Board Meeting in February:

Over the Christmas and New Year period, Underground services performed well.  In particular, there were only two significant incidents.  … . The post event de-briefs have shown that there was an overall reduction in incidents caused by alcohol/anti-social behaviour incidents across the network, with a significantly lower number of staff assaults after 04:00.

Well, thank goodness the new Mayor put that at the top of his transport priority list, eh?

Not sure what your point is here Tom. Are you saying that because there was a reduction in alcohol related incidents in the few days between Christmas and New Year (when passenger numbers are low) that there isn’t a wider problem of alcohol related incidents on London Transport over the other 359 days of the year? If so, you have yet to provide any evidence for this.

I think a lot of people - like me - have been scared by drunks - often teenies - on transport in London. Makes sense,IF it’s enforceable.

Remember what happened to New York crime when they started getting tough on minor issues?

    Yep.

Get over it , he’ll be at least as good as the Newt man

I appreciate that Beachhutman, and may even agree with you. What’s worth remembering, however, is that Boris was supported by many libertarians, who might be less than happy with, what they may perceive to be, attacks on their civil liberties. It’s also interesting to note that, in tackling crime, Giuliani faced numerous civil liberties suits, and it will be interesting to see what line the Johnson Administration will take.

It’s a strange idea, most journeys aren’t long enough to get rat assed on, the problem (if you can even call it that) is people being drunk before travelling…

Will - you quote Tom as saying “there was a reduction in alcohol related incidents in the few days between Christmas and New Year” when the phrase he actually quoted from TfL Board minutes was “Over the Christmas and New Year period”. Seeing as this includes New Year Eve when tube travel is free to around 4 a.m. New Year morning and therefore pretty busy with ‘revellers’ I’d have thought that “only two significant incidents” over the entire perod is evidence of a successful strategy, surely?

    TyburnTree (great name btw)
No not really. Its not comparing like with like. Compared to the massive daily traffic during ordinary weekday peaks the Christmas - NYs traffic probably doesn’t provide even a reasonable comparable. Not even close. And you allude to a successful strategy - its not clear what, or who’s…?

“It’s also interesting to note that, in tackling crime, Giuliani faced numerous civil liberties suits,”

…and no doubt they were all thrown out of court, in New York of course, but never in London.

“It’s also interesting to note that, in tackling crime, Giuliani faced numerous civil liberties suits,”

No, I think that he (well, his administration) lost most of them, charged with violating First Amendment rights.

This is the most passionate post that I’ve ever seen from Guido:

“This may be the most rapid disillusionment with a politician ever…”

BenSix, Guido’s tongue was very firmly in his cheek. Please don’t tell me you didn’t notice…..

    Will H,
Yes, of course I noticed. Not every word of mine is a frenzied indictment, you know.

    There’s libertarian off-pissedness:

Yes, I did think that it would provoke that kind of a reaction. They’re now planning “a protest of people who drink on public transport but don’t behave like utter cunts”.
