Boris has turned to the Olympics, as he prepares for the forthcoming visit of the International Olympic Committee coordination commission. One wonders whether this is an untimely trip, as the promises of budget cuts – though obviously welcome – remained ambiguous throughout the Mayoral campaign.
The Telegraph reports that Bovis Lend Lease, the private firm that are building the £2 billion Olympic village in East London, is already calling on ministers to increase the public sector contribution from its current level of £429 million. This, sources are alleged to have said, could only be done by ransacking the £2.7 billion contingency reserve, set aside for unforeseen and emergency expenditure. A team of private sector financial advisers has been hurried in to scrutinise the ever-spiralling spending.
Boris, meanwhile, has other Olympics plans to attend to. Sensibly, he has decided to decrease the number of officials travelling to Beijing, but it may still be prudent to consider inviting Guto Hari, as it may be difficult to find words to praise the ‘virtually nil’ cultural opportunities of the nation, let alone speculate on the unlikelihood of this situation changing.
Update: The Asia Times has taken note of the need for a Boris apology. Still, depending upon one’s opinion regarding Tibet, being criticised in this article may elsewhere constitute an endorsement.

Slag off enough countries and even Boris is bound to get one right eventually.
