An attempt to enhance the accountability of the new London mayoralty

Boris and the politics of language. Or should that be the language of politics?

Further to Mr. Stop Boris’ post on Rise: London United Against Racism comes the news that Boris only tells certain people certain things. Here’s the official press release on this year’s festival:

The Rise festival is a free event organised by the Greater London Authority and supported by Canary Wharf, Transport for London, British Transport Police and Kato Enterprises. Additional sponsorship is being sought; organisations wishing to find out more about sponsorship opportunities should email lucinda.mee@london.gov.uk.

Contrast this with the release sent to Dave Hill:

Rise festival is a free event celebrating diversity, organised by the Greater London Authority and supported by Canary Wharf, Transport for London, British Transport Police and Kato Enterprises. Additional sponsorship is being sought.

Notice any strange difference? The first, general release lacks any mention of “diversity” or anti-racism. The second, specific release, to a journalist who’d flagged the apparent lack of anti-racist content before it became official, mentions “diversity.”

Suspicious, no? It looks to be an attempt to quell scrutiny over the removal of anti-racist content by telling those that make a fuss that it’ll be there - while ignoring it for everyone else. Very odd indeed…
