I promise, or at least hope, that is my last excursion into gossip, but I can’t help noticing the developing friction between Boris and Assembly member John Biggs. It is probably to be expected, as the latter is Deputy Chair of the Labour Group, but even with that considered, he seems to be fashioning himself as the thorn in the Mayor’s side.
Earlier in June, Biggs stated that the farce of Boris’s advisers “cast real doubt” on his promise to be “open and transparent“, and later he earned the wrath of Richard Barnes for pointing out that the forensic audit panel is a“group of Conservative party politicians and supporters hand-picked by the mayor without any pretence of open process”. The peak of this provocation came when Biggs accused Boris of being an“empty vessel” having delegated away power.
For Boris’s part, ‘his’ written answers to Biggs are hardly measured:
“Do you share your Deputy Mayor’s view that it’s nice to look down on poor people because of his exalted and important status at City Hall?”
“No, and you know perfectly well his comments were made in jest.”
and later…
“Is a misleading title a fraud on Londoners?”
“No. The fraud is to ask unintelligible questions at Council Taxpayer’s expense.”
I know, what a bitch.
So, I may be speculating, but it seems that John Biggs considers himself to represent the opposition in the Assembly. If Boris is going to be genuinely scrutinised then hope should be in him and the lonely Green, Darren Johnson.
