An attempt to enhance the accountability of the new London mayoralty

Who said that?

July 6th, 2008 by Mr. Stop Boris

This quote, with a few minor alterations (which don’t change the meaning) indicated by square brackets, is included in a MayorWatch article about a senior Mayoral aide’s resignation amid media allegations of various wrongdoing. But who said it?

[The Mayor] has been standing by his man […] and in particular in recent [times] as allegation after allegation has emerged.

The Mayor has repeatedly assured Londoners that […] he trusts [his aide …].

The resignation of one of the […] Mayor’s most senior and trusted advisers is further proof that [the Mayor] has had his day.

Yes, you guessed it – this was Boris Johnson gloating at the resignation of Lee Jasper, back on 4 March.

If the last sentence I quoted was sincerely meant, and the resignation really provided proof of a Mayor having “had his day”, I hope Boris now has one of his team reading up on Mayoral resignation procedures!

(Actually, I don’t know why they would bother reading up on the procedures, when they could just do whatever felt right at the time and dismiss any criticism of their actions as nit-picking. After all, what could possibly go wrong if procedures aren’t followed? Everyone knows bureaucracy and red tape are a left-wing conspiracy.)
