Boris has pledged £60m to help bring empty homes back into residential use. In a statement, he said that:
“It is an absurdity that so many properties are empty in London when families are languishing on council housing waiting lists desperately hoping for a home. Empty properties cannot be left to rot and blight local neighbourhoods. I am determined to bring back many more into use to provide the affordable homes Londoners need, particularly if this can also help protect London’s rich architectural heritage.”
The Empty Homes agency suggests that there are just under 84,000 such properties, of which about 70,000 are privately owned and 10,000 council houses. Details of Boris’s plans are scarce at present, but the GLA has announced that it will carry out an audit of all abandoned homes, to provide resources for regeneration work.
