The Reactions Against Knife Crime

July 12th, 2008 by BenSix

Gordon Brown has announced that new anti-knife crime measures will be announced next week, after five men were killed in separate incidents during just twenty-four hours. Boris has stated that these measures will target ‘the underlying causes‘, and has said that:

“We need to do all we can to address the long term complex root causes of violence as well as ensuring the police are providing an effective deterrent to those who carry knives and guns.”

Hopefully, this will mean the announcement of a clear policy regarding violent crime, and in particular crime by adolescents. Following the departure of Ray Lewis, there has been no confirmation of whether previous speculations will be pursued or disregarded.

When not pouncing on the grief of Brooke Kinsella, the tabloids have been reporting on Lily Allen, who has apparently decided that “we need to have a knife amnesty. And we should put on a big concert to raise awareness and stop the violence”. This suggestion has won the support of Boris, who has said “it is brilliant that she is using her influence to make a stand and I look forward to hearing her plans.”

Popular figures who ‘could be approached by Lily’ for this ‘Knife Aid’ include Amy Winehouse, Razor-light, Kaiser Chiefs, Leona Lewis, Jay-Z, and the Sugababes. Be aware, however, that the Star could have arrived at that line-up through freewheeling improvisation.

wot would be the difference between a ’cause’ and an ‘underlying cause’?
