Having been away and/or busy for a few weeks now I’m a bit – just a bit, mind – out of touch with all things Boris. Fortunately, not only do I have the archives of handy blogs like our own to bring me up to speed, but also Dave Hill’s pulled together a great Comment is Free article about the latest one of Boris’s dubious appointments, Anthony Browne.
CiF comments on Dave’s articles are often quite depressing really – the massed ranks of the Boris-backers and lefty-loathers come out to jump on every word he’s written and rub our noses in our failure to stop Boris being elected.
Of all the criticisms of Dave’s coverage of Browne though, the strangest one seems to me to be one I read earlier where they seemed to be complaining that the policies supported and beliefs held by someone should not be taken into account when being considered for employment, so it was wrong to criticise Browne for the views he had previously espoused. That might be a fair point, except that Browne is Boris’s Director of Policy!
Still, while I find his writing pretty ridiculous (not to mention offensive), I shall of course wait to see how he actually performs now he’s in post.
Isn’t it funny how so many of Boris’s employees come from Policy Exchange, though, after all the fuss about Ken’s Socialist Action ‘cronies’? One wonders how transparent or indeed fair the appointment processes can have been if out of all the qualified people in London, so many posts ended up going to such a narrow circle of people.
