A Contrast In Consultations

August 8th, 2008 by Tom

Compare and contrast:

a) The GLA contemplates the future of the Congestion Charge Western Extension:

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has delivered another key manifesto pledge by announcing that a five-week public consultation on the future of the Western Extension will begin in early September.

Anyone with an opinion to share or comment to make on the Western Extension can contribute to the consultation. But Transport for London is particularly keen to hear from local residents, retailers and businesses within or on the borders of the extension.

b) The GLA contemplates the future of the Parliament Square

Stakeholder consultation is underway, and public consultation is set to take place in mid 2008.

Or rather it won’t.

Hang on.  That means he’s scrapped the scheme *literally* as public consultation should have been starting.  Why on earth would he do that?  Surely, committed as he is to openness and fairness, he ought to have announced that he’d hold the consultation and abide by its results, rather than pre-empting the results and concluding that it would find in favour of the minority of Londoners who want to drive and/or don’t mind the Square being a traffic-ridden eyesore?  Isn’t that rather, well, Livingstonian?
