The Evening Boris reports: In a letter to airport bosses before the conditions were met, Mr Johnson said: “I strongly recognise and appreciate the contribution City Airport makes to London’s world city status, and the benefits the airport offers to the City and Canary Wharf.
“I also recognise and support the economic contribution and employment opportunities it provides for Newham residents. These would be enhanced by the current proposals and, as such, I offer support for the expansion sought.”
There is no mention of the increased noise and pollution for Newham residents and those in adjacent boroughs, of course. Boris claims to be against Heathrow expansion, because increased noise and pollution would affect residents of leafy Arbourland, maybe?

Boris has let the whole of South East & East London down with his support of London City Airport expanding. This same airport that promised years ago to it’s neighbours that it would never use Jet planes, it also promised no expansion after getting up to 30,00 flights a year. It promised 4,000 jobs on it’s last expansion. 200 jobs were created. Reduntacy is now being brought in on LCA. Everything they’ve promised to Newham and its residents for years have never come to life. They use Hill & Knowlton PR to bribe and manipulate surrounding borough’s the same PR company used by the tabaco industry to claim smoking did not cause cancer.
Boris want to look after he’s Canar Warf and City boys who use the airport. The avaerage wage of a City Airpot customer is 86,000pa. Who cares about the residentsand home owners who were dooped to by in the area with promises that he airport would not expand and ruin peoples home lives.
Thanks Boris I thought you’d be a bit different. How wrong I was.
A bit different to an upper-class Tory with rich, powerful friends?
Welcome to the writing team, Helen.
Well said, Barry and thank you, Tom!
Johnson’s comments about employment opportunities for local people sound much the same as those put forward by Heathrow expansion apologists. Mind you, City Airport is much more convenient for Islington residents, such as Johnson, than Heathrow and its planes do not overfly Islington. On the other hand, Henley, where I believe Johnson still has a home, does suffer noise from planes using Heathrow when the airport is on easterly operations. Is it a coincidence that he is opposed to one airport’s expansion and is supportive of the other’s expansion?
Not to mention his support for the mythical Thames Gateway airport, last seen floating off into the English Channel.
Welcome, Helen :o)
