5th May 2008, GLA press release:
“We face a wave of violent crime amongst young people in the Capital. Kids are killing other kids. Ray will be part of my team who will work night and day until we put an end to this tragic trend.
“Working with voluntary groups across the Capital, we will make a real difference to the lives of young people and their families. Londoners need action on this issue, and I won’t rest until we deliver it”.
15th October 2008, Mayor’s Question Time Written Answers (h/t the Political Animal):
In question 2219/2008, former Deputy Mayor Nicky Gavron asked about the timetable for replacing Ray Lewis, who resigned in July, as deputy mayor for children and young people. Johnson’s answer, in full:
My Deputy Mayor for Policing, Kit Malthouse has taken responsibility for this brief.
Hmm, that got solved quickly, didn’t it? Malthouse, as we know, cannot be working night and day on this, what with his job as an elected AM (£54k), his job as deputy chairman of the MPA (for which he receives a tidy extra £55k) and as the driving force behind building an expensive white elephant airport in the wrong place on a ship full of bombs.

If you follow Boris’s logic for the reason why he doesn’t need an Adviser or Pretend Deputy Mayor for Women then he doesn’t need anyone with special responsibility for children, does he?
