Remember the early Boris/Kulveer decision to keep Parliament Square as an inaccessible traffic island (or, as Boris put it, a ‘green glade of heroes’)? Building Design website has an interesting article about the guy behind the scheme, that’s well worth reading, particularly for this bit which confirms what we thought at the time:
Transport for London and Johnson’s concerns were about the wider traffic implications. We improved conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, we maintained bus and taxi routes. The problem was the private car user. We argued that if we were able to reduce traffic in central London by 1-2%, the effects on Parliament Square would be mitigated. We felt very strongly that the traffic issues were adequately dealt with.
