As reported yesterday by LabourList, Boris Johnson’s expenses [PDF] reveal that he flew to San Francisco and spent one night in the Intercontinental Hotel (Please note that the Jacuzzi is under maintenance until further notice – did somebody break it recently?) in February this year for the purposes of Negotiations for a major investment in London. The Mayor’s Office declined to elaborate on the nature of the trip.

However, the Mayor did not make this trip alone – he was accompanied by Sir Edward Lister (Chief of Staff)  [PDF] and Isabel Dedring (Deputy Mayor for Transport) [PDF].

Boris Johnson’s claimed expenses for the trip:

£4,105.95 29/01/13 – Return flights from London to San Francisco.
Negotiations for a major investment in London

£120.37 04/02/13 – Accommodation costs at Intercontinental Hotel
in San Francisco. Negotiations for a major investment in
London

Sir Edward Lister’s claimed expenses for the trip:

£48.35 30/01/13 – ESTA Travel Application for the US for flight to San
Francisco – Negotiations for a major investment in London

£46.22  03/02/13 – Taxi from home (SW18) to London Heathrow Airport due
to carrying heavy luggage

£31.85 03/02/13 – Taxi from San Francisco Airport to Hotel – Negotiations for
a major investment in London

£9.52 04/02/13 – Wifi used at the Intercontinental Hotel in San Francisco –
Negotiations for a major investment in London

£89.19 04/02/13 – Taxi from down town San Francisco to Airport due to time
constraints – Negotiations for a major investment in London

£13.20 05/02/13 – Travel from London Heathrow Airport to the office after trip
in San Francisco for negotiations for a major investment in London

£4,105.95 29/01/13 – Return flights from London to San Francisco –
Negotiations for a major investment in London

£120.37 04/02/13 – Accommodation costs at Intercontinental Hotel in San
Francisco – Negotiations for a major investment in London

Isabel Dedring’s claimed expenses for the trip:

£375.79 01/02/13 – Return flights from London to San Francisco to
attending meeting with the Mayor and Chief of Staff. Negotiations
for a major investment in London

£120.37 04/02/13 – Accommodation costs at Intercontinental Hotel in San
Francisco. Negotiations for a major investment in London.

Note the difference in the cost of flights for Boris Johnson and Sir Edward Lister (both claimed £4,105.95) and the £375.79 claimed by Isabel Dedring. The important men travelled in business class whilst the woman was in cattle class?

As City Hall has refused to explain the purpose of this trip to San Francisco, and as the Deputy Mayor for Transport was involved, it’s my guess that Boris Johnson plans to bring to London an archaic form of public transport which is almost as loss-making as his cable car and cycle hire scheme and even more prone to litigation claims than a bus which runs with its back door open - the San Francisco Cable Car.
